Do Garage Doors in North Texas Need a Wind-Load Rating?

How wind-load ratings work for garage doors in Texas: what DASMA and the IRC say, PSF vs MPH, and the questions to ask before buying a new door.

When people compare new garage doors they ask about style, insulation, and price — and skip the one specification written for the worst afternoon of the year. North Texas gets real wind. The garage door is the largest opening in the wall. Those two facts are worth five minutes.

Why the biggest opening matters most

The Door & Access Systems Manufacturers Association (DASMA) maintains an entire family of technical data sheets on this: TDS #152 covers garage doors in high-wind events, TDS #153 covers vertically reinforcing sectional doors for wind-load conditions, and TDS #155 is a set of residential and commercial wind-load guides. The engineering reason is pressure: when a large opening fails in high wind, wind enters and pressurizes the building from inside, and the damage stops being about the door.

PSF, not MPH — the spec most buyers misread

Wind ratings on garage doors are expressed in pounds per square foot (PSF) — the pressure the assembly resists — not in miles per hour. DASMA publishes a data sheet on exactly this confusion (TDS #194, “PSF versus MPH in Door Specifications”): a single mph number can’t honestly describe a door’s rating, because the pressure a given wind speed produces depends on the door’s size, the building’s shape, and the site’s exposure category (TDS #193). A vendor who answers “it’s good to 130 mph” without paperwork is quoting marketing, not a specification.

What applies in DFW versus the coast

Texas’s mandatory windstorm construction program runs through the Texas Department of Insurance, and TDI’s own guidance frames it plainly: coastal property must meet specific building standards to qualify for windstorm insurance. Dallas–Fort Worth is not in that coastal program. What governs here is the building code your city has adopted — North Texas cities generally base theirs on the International Residential Code, which assigns design wind loads for components and cladding, garage doors included — plus each city’s local amendments. Two honest implications for a DFW buyer:

  1. You likely aren’t required to buy the coastal-spec door. Inland design loads are lower than seaward ones.
  2. “Not required” is not “not worth it.” The door still carries the largest share of wall pressure in a spring storm, and the difference between an unrated builder-grade door and a documented wind-load option is a legitimate line item to evaluate while you’re already replacing the door. The checklist before you order

  • Ask for the door’s wind-load rating in writing — PSF, positive and negative — and whether the quoted price includes the reinforcement hardware that rating assumes.
  • Ask whether the assembly carries a label consistent with IRC practice (DASMA TDS #1502), and keep the documentation with the house records; insurers and future buyers can ask for it.
