Accessibility statement

What we aim for

This site targets WCAG 2.2 Level AA. The points below are checked automatically when the site is built, so they are measurements rather than intentions.

What is checked on every build

• Every text and surface colour pair clears the AA contrast ratio, in light, in dark, and inside the dark bands used in both.
• Text resizes without loss of content. No text step grows more than two and a half times between the narrow and wide layouts, and every fluid size is anchored in rem so browser zoom acts on it.
• No horizontal scrolling at a 320 pixel viewport.
• Every control and standalone link is at least 24 pixels in both directions. Buttons and form fields are at least 44.
• Form controls never render below 16 pixels, so mobile browsers do not zoom when a field is focused.
• Status and error messages never rely on colour alone. Each carries a dashed border, an icon, and the state named in words.
• Focus indicators use an outline rather than a shadow, so they survive Windows contrast themes.
• Animation and smooth scrolling are switched off when the operating system asks for reduced motion.

Known limits

Under tritanopia, a rare form of colour blindness, the brand orange and the error colour are closer together than we would like. Every hue that reads as an error to most people has that problem against an orange brand. That is why an error is never signalled by colour on its own.

The site has not yet been tested by people using screen readers in practice. Automated checks catch a great deal and they do not catch everything.
